The East Bank Esplanade Bike/Walking Path

This is one of the best & most accessible bike paths within a short distance of downtown Portland. The Eastbank Esplanade Trail, when combined with the Waterfront Trail on the west side of the Willamette River, forms a nice 3 mile loop between the Steel Bridge on the north and the Hawthorne Bridge on the south. By parking your car, if you have one, somewhere near the Sellwood neighborhood, you can add a nice section of the Springwater Trail to the mix.

If you want to combine activities, you can ride your bikes to Oaks Amusement Park, Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge, OMSI, or even into downtown Portland. Bike rentals are plentiful in Portland if you did not bring yours along.

The bike trail can get somewhat crowded, especially when the sun peeks out and people are starving for a little sunshine. This is a great family trail (The Springwater Trail is a 40 mile loop in total) but watch out for hard core bikers in packs as they often fly through here going 20 plus miles per hour. Therefore, we recommend keeping a close eye on kids. The trail is not wide enough on busy days, and toddler's movements are often hard to predict.

The East Bank Esplanade Bike/Walking Path

This section is within 3 miles of downtown Portland. It is a great section for all ages - kids in strollers or carriers, kids on training wheels, beginners, teens, parents, and the hardcore bikers too.

The parental stress factor hovers low to medium. We wouldn't rate it high even on the busiest days, but you do have to watch your kids closely (Keep right). Make sure you stay in your respective lane and be conscious of other riders. Be aware of who or what is coming up behind you also.

This is not a very difficult section. Sometimes you can get a stiff wind, but for the most part, this is a flat ride with a couple of uphill sections here and there.

The family fun factor is medium to high and depends on how much you bike as a family. This is also a pet friendly trail for walking or running your furry friends, but a leash is an absolute necessity. Off leash dogs are unpredictable and could easily end up in front of a fast moving bike.

Portland is such a great town in which to ride bikes. Have fun!
